Private Pages PDF Print E-mail
This is simply a use of the Joomla software that is already installed on any Joomla website, but it can be very useful. In fact, someone viewing the site without logging in will not even see the limited-access menu item or be aware that it exists on the site; if it is limited to Special users, as explained below, anyone with Special access will be able to see it with no problem. The firm may want to have pages that can be seen by Registered users, or that can only be seen by Special users, who have been approved for access by the website administrator.

For instance, the office may want to post notices of staff meetings or other office functions, but not allow public access to the page. That is simple to do in Joomla. When the private page is set up, the developer can simply set the Access Level to Special. In the Text Editor, under Publishing, there is a choice of Public, Registered or Special. Just click on Special and save the article settings.  Then, any user who registers can be given Special access through File Manager >> User Manager. Click on the user name, and choose the level of access.

Another use for such special access would be for posting committee minutes. Any especially sensitive firm business or confidential client information should not be contained on such pages, since no security will deter an experienced hacker.

If the firm wants to give Special access to a general group of users, you could consider turning off the requirement for a unique email address under Home >> Global Configuration. In Global Configuration, the Site page is the first to appear, and offers the option of requiring a unique email. A user could be created, given a name, such as "Staff" or "CLE Committee," given a password, and anyone with the username and password could log in and see the latest news. This could also be used for clients, by giving them access to special resources prepared by the firm, such as guidelines to avoid litigation, or instructions in case of a work injury.

Update: RocketTheme has published a new site, offering extensions for Joomla 1.5, including RokACL, which allows the Administrator to set up multiple groups in addition to those automatically set up in Joomla. It should be ready soon. Click here to go to the web page on RolACL.
