File Transfer Protocol, or FTP, sounds difficult to set up. It was part of the original structure of the Internet, before it was called the Internet, so how easy could it be? I won't admit how long I put off learning to use FTP, and developing work-arounds, only to discover how easy it is to set up and use. The solution for me was FireFTP, a Firefox add-on from Mozilla, the developers of the Firefox browser.
Setting up FireFTP is really pretty straightforward. You need your username and password that you use any time you connect with your hosting service provider. Those are very easy. Then you need the name of the FTP account, which should be even easier. For instance, if your website is www.smithlaw.com, your ftp address should be ftp.smithlaw.com. That's all you need, and you're ready to start transferring files. Click on the blue seahorse to download the file from the Mozilla add-on site. Install, and FireFTP should show up in your Firefox browser, under Tools >> FireFTP.
You can set up multiple FTP accounts, if you have more than one website
to maintain. That way, if you want to install a new file, or replace a
file, you don't even have to open each website; you can work from
FireFTP, switch accounts, and get the job done much more easily. Click here for very nice, easy step-by-step instructions on installing and setting up FireFTP.
The feature that distinguishes FireFTP from other FTP "clients" is that
FireFTP resides in Firefox, not on your computer; also, you can install
a FireFTP link in your Firefox browser icon menu, next to the Print,
New Tab, Home, Go Back and Refresh icons. If you have a Google toolbar
in your browser, you also have the option of inserting the FireFTP icon
to the Google toolbar. Adding the FireFTP icon to your icon menu is
easy, and is explained below. When that is set up, you don't even have
to leave Firefox to transfer files. You just click on the little blue
seahorse icon on the Firefox menu, choose the ftp account for the site
you want to access, and you are ready to begin.
For an excellent video tutorial showing how to use RocketLauncher (see Toolkit - RocketTheme - RocketLauncher or click here ) with FireFTP to install a template and Joomla at the same time, click on the logo below.
There are other FTP programs that are very popular, the most famous of which are Filezilla
(version 3 is now in Beta) and CuteFTP. Filezilla
and FireFTPare
free. CuteFTP is a commercial product, and has some nice features, if
you want to pay for them, including the option of right-clicking on a
file and transferring it via FTP from anywhere on your computer,
without opening your browser or CuteFTP. Win and Mac versions are
available, as well as a support plan.
To install the little blue FireFTP icon on your Firefox menu system, just right-click on the address and icon menu bar. Choose Customize,
and look for the little blue FireFTP seahorse. Drag that icon where you
want it to go in the icon toolbar, or drag it to the Google toolbar if
you prefer. You're ready to "FTP" like a pro.
